Romeo y Julieta Churchills: Cuban Cigar Classics

By definition in the Dictionary, Classic is an adjective used to describe something which has been ‘judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind’. The Romeo y Julieta Churchills cigar certainly fits that bill.

It was reported earlier this week that a cigar smoked by Britain’s Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, will be bought for a whooping £1,200 at an auction tomorrow- Saturday 19th of May. It’s obvious that Churchill’s legacy lives on and people are still in awe of him, so much so that they would buy Romeo y Julieta cigars which are 70 years old, half smoked and being sold for an extortionate amount.

The Churchill by Romeo y Julieta cigars is proof of his stature as an inspirational individual, with cigars being named after him left, right and centre, including one of the Montecristo Cuban cigars.

The Romeo y Julieta Churchill’s vitola is the flagship of the brand’s portfolio, with many recognising it as the brand’s most classic cigar. The Churchill vitola, known as a Julieta No.2 has a 47 ring gauge and is 178mm in length.

As aforementioned, the Churchill takes its name from the British Prime Minister who successfully governed the country during World War II. It is common knowledge that Churchill was the biggest advocate for Romeo y Julieta cigars and was consistently seen and photographed smoking one. It has been said that he enjoyed a vitola of this size and that is why this cigar has taken his name.

Strong and smooth, the cigar seems to imitate the man himself, known for his strength and courage governing a country at war and for his wonderful way with words.

ROMEO Y JULIETA'S STORY

The story of Romeo and Juliet has captured hearts for over 500 years and served as inspiration for art, literature, film and more. Romeo y Julieta’s founders were too inspired by its story and established the brand in 1875.

The brand created quality cigars and earned copious gold medals during the years 1885-1890 at tasting exhibitions in Cuba and the rest of the world.

The brand’s recognition and popularity only increased during the early 1900s. Jose ‘Pepin’ Rodriguez Fernandez acquired the brand in the year 1903 and through his dynamic marketing efforts the brand made a name for itself amongst the famous and the wealthy.

Just like many other Cuban cigar brands, during the Cuban revolution, Romeo y Julieta re-established itself in the Dominican Republic and has proven itself to be one of the most popular brands on the American market.

Nevertheless, Cuba still upholds the rights to the Cuban classics and to this day produces some of the best cigars in the world.
